How to Attempt SSC CGL Tier 1 Question Paper – By Rahul Garg (AIR 5 CGL 13)

We have been receiving a lot of queries about strategy for attempting the Paper.

Candidates are confused which order they should follow, how much time should be given to each section and having many other apprehensions. As this is the first and most important phase of your exam, we are not going to give you some random strategy.

We are going to share the Strategy adopted by one of the toppers of CGL 2013. On our request, Rahul Garg (AIR 5, CGL 2013) has shared his own strategy of attempting Tier 1 exam. He scored 150 in this paper and with that score he built a good momentum which lasted till Final score of CGL. We thank him on behalf of every candidate who is benefitting from articles, session and study material shared by him.

So let’s hear it from the horse’s mouth

I am going to share the plan I adopted for Tier 1 Paper . But before I do, I must say one thing to all of you there is never a perfect plan or strategy to attempt a paper. I built my strategy after a lot of experiments while attempting Mock Tests and I would advise you to do the same.

But as time is less now and this is an already proven formula, you can directly go for it, if it suits your strengths and weaknesses.

Order which should be followed according to me:

  1. General Awareness

The reason for choosing this section as first is you already know that you(most of the aspirants) are not going to score very good in this section, so less attempts won’t dishearten you but just in case if you are able to attempt more than you anticipated, your morale would be high for the whole 2 hours.

Key points to be taken care of while attempting this section :

  • Try to finish it off in 12-15 minutes.
  • Only if you are totally clueless about a question, you should leave it. Otherwise attempt the question by eliminating other options or by guessing(only if you have some idea about that option).
  • Be sure you see all the questions of this section with proper attention. Most of the times we are reluctant to attempt this Section till the end and hence lose some easy pickings.
  • Once done, leave nothing for later stage. You won’t get time for second round and even if you get, you won’t like to waste it on this Section.

   2.English Language and Comprehension

If you are good in this section , it will give you highest “Marks to Time” Ratio .

Reason for choosing it next , this section always takes approximately same time irrespective of your proficiency in English and difficulty level of the section. So you should complete it in the first part of the paper itself.

Key points to be taken care of while attempting this section :

  • Try to finish it in 20-23 minutes.
  • Only if you are totally clueless about a question, you should leave it. Otherwise attempt the question by eliminating other options or by guessing (only if you have some idea about that option).
  • Make sure you attempt the Comprehension. Most of the time it is very easy. If you fear you won’t be able to complete the section in stipulated time , attempt Comprehension first.
  • Idioms can easily be done by applying common sense and eliminating other options.
  • Read twice the questions of error finding, improvement and Fill ups. While reading second time, you will find it a lot easier.
  • You can mark 2-3 questions in which you are extremely confused and attempt them in the second round.
  • This section can be done in 20-23 minutes. Make sure you see all 50 questions in this time period.

So GA and English should be completed in first 35-40 minutes including the time for bubbling the responses. These are the sections in which you can atleast see all the 100 questions. Try to achieve that in your mock tests also. It will give you a lot of confidence.

   3. Logical Reasoning

Next comes Logical Reasoning. This section is all about picking the right questions. It is like Cricket, your shot selection(question selection) determines your score. You should know which balls(questions) to leave . Selecting a wrong question can waste a lot of time, which can be used otherwise to solve 4-5 easy questions.

Key points to be taken care of while attempting this section :

  • Assign this section a fix time of 30 minutes.
  • No matter how many questions you are able to see or answer, just stick to the deadline of 30 minutes.
  • Quick Selection of easy questions is very very important here. Logical Reasoning section normally has a variety of questions each having a different difficulty level.
  • Try to look for easy pickings first. While giving Mock test itself , you should decide the topics in which you find yourself comfortable and should attempt them first in the actual exam.
  • You can mark the questions, which you are not attempting due to the lack of time but are doable according to you. These can be solved if time allows you to go for second round.
  • Just in case you are able to see all the questions but not able to solve many. No worries, leave the section after doing all doable questions and move to next section even if 30 minutes are not over.
  • This is because sometimes one section is made difficult in comparison to others. So, you should utilize time spared from one section to solve other easy sections.
  • Also, if you are able to save time because of this, you can come for the second round at the end of the exam.

At this time you can start filling the bubbles for 3 sections done till now. It will give your mind a much needed break and  will also relieve some pressure of filling all 200 bubbles at the end.

Guidelines for filling up bubbles :

  • Be very careful while filling the bubbles.
  • There are many cases where Aspirants just to save few seconds, bubble wrong box and thereby waste the time they spent in solving that question.
  • Also it disturbs your peace of mind which is very important to be maintained during the whole exam.
  • Special care should be given to leave the “Question number” in OMR sheet which you could not solve . A mistake there and you will end up marking 10-15 questions wrong in a row.
  • Therefore you should keep checking the Serial number of questions in OMR and Question paper. This can be done after every 5 question since in OMR Questions come in groups of 5.
  • If you are filling all 200 bubbles at the end, make sure you spare 20 minutes for it. Any unused time there can be utilized at the end . But spare whole 20 minutes for it at any cost.
  • Always remember if due to lack of time, you could not fill or you wrongly fill a bubble for a solved question, it will cost you a lot.
  • You are getting marks according to OMR not Question Paper. So always take care of mentioned points .

    4. Quantitative Aptitude

Question selection is very important for this section also. Reason for attempting this section at the end(even though I always score good in Maths) is that, the difficult questions of this section can easily keep you away from a good score in overall exam. Some questions here are big time suckers and should be attempted at the very very end so that other sections and their easy questions are solved first to ensure a good score. And only if time allows you can go for luxuries.

how-to-attempt-cgl tier 1 questions

Careful reading of Quant section question is the most important part in current scenario. The current trends of SSC Exams shows they are checking our accuracy by giving easy question papers (some exceptions also there). So, a careless reading may let you to mark wrong answer. For e.g. In Mensuration questions of previous papers, diameter or different units of different elements were given, which was not the practice followed by SSC before, So a careful reading will eliminate the slightest chance of mistake due to the trick played by SSC.

Key points to be taken care of while attempting this section :

  • Assign this section a fix time of 30 minutes.
  • No matter how many questions you are able to see or answer, just stick to the deadline of 30 minutes.
  • Solve Data Interpretation first. Most of the times they are easy.
  • You can mark the questions, which you are not attempting due to the lack of time but are doable according to you. These can be solved if time allows you to go for second round.
  • If you are attempting the paper according to my plan, Maths will come at the end. So just in case you are able to see all questions but not able to solve many. No worries leave the section even if time is left(out of 30 minutes).

Last stage, very important to score those extra marks which will decide the state you get after final result.

  • After completing all the 4 sections, Fill the bubbles for all the attempted questions.
  • Now if you followed the above plan, you must be left with 5 minutes + the time you could save from any section and bubble filling. With this time in hand, Go for 2nd round of the whole paper.
  • Start with English. Give a quick search for the questions you have marked. See them and decide their answers and directly mark them in OMR(very imp – don’t avoid marking them in OMR thinking that you will bubble OMR at the end of 2nd round in one go).
  • Do the same with Logical Reasoning and Maths. Here you should be cautious about not picking the very difficult questions. Leave them for 3rd round if possible.
  • Keep doing it till Invigilator takes your sheet.

Let me again stress upon some very important points:

  1. Fix time for each section and stick to it at any cost.
  2. Do not make it a matter of your pride to solve a difficult question . It is not an MBA paper. Just do the questions which you really can do it in less time.
  3. There are always some easy topics in each section. To make you skip them, they are given at the end of the section like comprehension in English, Data Interpretation in Maths and Matrix Questions in LR.
  4. You will also have some favorite topics which you find very easy . Make sure you attempt such topics at any cost . Best way is to attempt them in the starting of respective sections.

Finally why did I choose this Order in the first place??

  • I chose this order so that I leave minimum Questions at the end . I arranged them in the increasing order of time required to attempt the whole section. The section which takes less time , I attempted first. Logic behind this is , If you are able to see/do 50 questions of one section in 15 minutes and in same time, only 20 questions of other section. So in a situation, you are falling short of 15 minutes at the end, you will always regret you attempted those 20 questions instead of 50 questions. In SSC there is no extra mark for attempting a difficult or time consuming question so it is always wise to first attempt all the easy and doable questions.

Your feedback will be valuable to me. All the best for the exam.

word power made easy

This book, Word Power Made Easy, uses real life situations to demonstrate the power of words. The book begins by showing the reader how to assess their current vocabulary and how to start building word skills. It is divided into three main sections.

Word Power Made Easy starts by showing how to start building word skills, and then explains how to acquire better word skills quickly and learn at a faster pace. Then, the book shows how one can become proficient in building vocabulary, and how to keep learning new words and ways to use them.

This book uses interesting themes to show how to use words effectively. It contains chapters like insulting or flattering enemies and friends, talking about various professions, successfully discussing science and scientists, describing actions effectively and so on. Word Power Made Easy takes a root of the word based approach to vocabulary building. It traces the etymology of the words being discussed. Once the origin of the word is explained, a lot of similar words sharing the same origin are introduced. This technique is useful in remembering a lot of words, as they are related by a common source which serves as a mnemonic.

The book also contains an interesting section on esoteric phobias. It contains pronunciation keys, a test of grammar skills, and a section discussing how grammar changed over the years. It provides tips on proper usage, how to adapt to changing usage, and shows how to acquire the skill of natural speech without any affectations. It contains a list of some words that have recently been added to the language and shows how to build proper spelling skills.

Word Power Made Easy is an easy, practical guide to building a good vocabulary, learning about proper usage, pronunciation, and spelling.
